Going Kramer-style with the blatant disregard of my fuel gauge. I do so much in-town driving these days that a full tank lasts me weeks. And gas stations are aplenty, so I don’t have any anxiety when I get low.
Anyway, good morning everyone.

Of my two running old cars, one’s gauge reads backwards and the other one keeps refusing to work no matter what I do. My Benz (‘87, less old) has been having issues with float stick or something lately too.

Oh, that’s about 50 litres. I bought 50l today too but sadly it cost me €72.

I haven’t even remotely had fuel anxiety since getting a car with a functioning gas gauge

I never ran out of fuel in my 1961 Vw bug that never came with a fuel gauge until I installed a 1967 tank and gauge. true story.

I found out the other day that my XJ’s fuel gauge has decided that at a quarter tank and below that it will go down faster. 18 mpg normally? Let’s go four miles and show below empty.

My wife regularly lets the CX-5 get down to an estimated 3-4 miles of range per the information center in the gauge cluster. Thankfully, it overestimates and there is actually 1.5 to 2 gallons left at that point.

Nope

They always have a little reserve.

I’d be afraid that I’d go up a hill a little too steep, run out of gas, and burn out a fuel pump...
Then again, did they use fuel pumps in the fuel tanks of these?

Every modern car with one of those estimated range readouts seems to have a gallon of two when they hit zero.

No, fuel pump is under the hood on this.

Does it require fuel for cooling? I’d guess that it doesn’t.

Probably the sending unit or whatever the Jag equivalent is. The one in my truck was the same way and progressively got worse. It got to where a 1/4 tank could mean 1/4 tank or it could mean E after barely driving. Then it got to where 1/2 tank could be half or 1/4. Replaced the unit and now it’s accurate again

My Mazda: E means I have over 2 gallons left. My truck: E means “let’s hope there’s enough fumes to make it”

Is it a 14 gallon tank?

That’s how it was in my Taurus too. Also this is a Jeep. I’m just too lazy to care at the moment. I may do it when I pull the engine and replace the suspension and all that fun stuff.
